Why some seniors’ expectations of care by their children have changed and what this means for an ageing Singapore?

In Singapore, addressing the needs of an ageing population presents significant challenges, especially regarding care for elderly family members. While the traditional familial support system has been the norm, recent research suggests that this approach, particularly in terms of financial assistance and household chores, may not always contribute positively to the elderly’s well-being. For adult children, providing such support is often viewed as a responsibility, yet for ageing parents, it can sometimes evoke feelings of dependency and shame.

Research conducted by the Department of Geography at the National University of Singapore in 2022 highlights a shifting perspective within families, especially those with adult children residing abroad. Many envision a future where they maintain independence with occasional visits and financial support, rather than cohabiting with their children. This change in mindset can be attributed to factors like exposure to diverse ideas, evolving intergenerational dynamics, migration trends among adult children, and the availability of alternative eldercare options such as nursing homes.

Consequently, more elderly Singaporeans are opting for independent living arrangements, such as living alone or with a spouse in smaller accommodations, rather than relying solely on their adult children. This trend reflects evolving perceptions of filial piety and independence among the elderly population.

The task of caring for older individuals in Singapore is undoubtedly challenging due to the increasing elderly population. While families traditionally play a crucial role in providing support, recent studies suggest that this may not always be sufficient to address seniors’ needs. However, with collective efforts and enhanced understanding, we can transform these challenges into opportunities for learning and connection.
