Aunty Mui Li: YAH! Volunteer

This International Volunteer Day, we meet one of our dedicated senior volunteers who took a leap and decided to start her volunteering journey with Young-At-Heart! (YAH!).

Volunteering was always on Auntie Mui Li’s mind, but she wasn’t sure where to start.

Joining YAH! opened her eyes to the possibilities. “I didn’t know volunteering could involve planning activities,” she shares. “It’s been such a joy to learn, grow, and give back.”

Her favourite part of volunteering? Planning and hosting activities. “I discovered I have a knack for emceeing and sharing songs,” she says with a smile. “It’s fun to try new things and realise what I’m capable of.”

For Auntie Mui Li, leading and delegating responsibilities has become second nature, and she finds joy in creating meaningful experiences for others.

Volunteering helped Auntie Mui Li discover hidden talents, including her knack for emceeing!

One of Auntie Mui Li’s most memorable moments was meeting a senior who, after losing his mother, found comfort and connection through Goodlife Studio (Bukit Purmei)’s programmes, where she volunteers.

Over time, he opened up, sharing stories of his past. One day, he surprised the volunteers by preparing a delicious pot of tau suan (mung bean dessert). “It was a simple act, but it showed how much he had healed and connected with us,” Auntie Mui Li reflects warmly.

Of course, volunteering comes with challenges. Planning activities for a diverse group with different languages, backgrounds, and education levels isn’t always easy. “Finding balance is key,” she explains. “We have to ensure everyone feels included and has a chance to participate.” Despite the hurdles, she approaches each task with patience and understanding.

Her advice for aspiring volunteers is straightforward:  “Just do it!” “Don’t overthink—take action.”

There are so many volunteering opportunities out there, and you’ll never know what you like until you try,” she encourages. “Whether it’s helping seniors or other causes, every little effort makes a difference.”

For Auntie Mui Li, volunteering bridges generations and builds connections. “It’s wonderful that people my age can get involved and grow closer to seniors,” she says.

Join Aunty Mui Li and volunteer with us today! A heartfelt and fulfilling journey awaits you!
