Grow Where We Go: World Mental Health Day 2024

Our team at World Mental Health Day

This past weekend, ahead of World Mental Health Day, we gathered at Gardens by the Bay for an afternoon dedicated to reconnecting with our well-being. Against the backdrop of lush greenery and serene water features, our clients from Montfort Care Mental Health embarked on a sensory journey designed to help them stay grounded, explore their emotions, and discover new ways to support their mental wellness.

 

Engaging the Senses for Mental Wellness

Often, when we feel overwhelmed, our senses can serve as a powerful anchor—bringing us back to the present moment and helping us regain a sense of balance. With this in mind, we curated a series of activities that engaged different senses, allowing participants to connect with themselves and their surroundings in meaningful ways:

🎵 Therapeutic Rhythmic Drumming – Using rhythm and movement, participants explored how drumming can be a form of self-expression and stress relief, helping to regulate emotions and promote mindfulness.

🎨 Art Jamming – With a blank canvas and vibrant colours, participants painted their emotions, translating feelings into art. Creative expression offers a valuable outlet for emotions that may be difficult to put into words.

🍵 Mindful Tea Sipping – A simple yet profound exercise in presence, this session encouraged participants to focus on the warmth, aroma, and taste of tea, reinforcing how mindfulness can be woven into daily routines.

🥋 Muay Thai – Movement-based practices can be a great way to release stress and build confidence. In this session, participants learned the basics of Muay Thai, tapping into their physical strength and resilience.

🎶 Music Imagery Session – Led by music psychotherapist @Eta Lauw, this session guided participants through a deep listening experience, using music to evoke emotions, memories, and relaxation.

🏞 A Walk Through the Cloud Forest & Flower Dome – To conclude the day, participants explored the beauty of the Cloud Forest and Flower Dome, immersing themselves in the calming presence of nature and finding peace in the moment.

 

A Collective Moment of Support and Reflection

Beyond the activities, one of the most heartfelt parts of the event was the Montfort Care Tree—a space where participants wrote affirmations and words of encouragement for those struggling with their mental health. The simple act of writing and reading these messages reinforced a powerful message: No one is alone in their journey.

Coming Together as a Community

This event would not have been possible without the incredible support of Gardens by the Bay, who provided a beautiful setting for reflection and connection. Their dedication to making this event a reality is deeply appreciated. 💚

We are also grateful to our partners at the Agency for Integrated Care (AIC) for attending and supporting the initiative. Mental health remains a growing challenge in our community, and we’re thankful for partners like AIC who help us provide essential care for those in need.

A Reminder That Mental Wellness is a Journey

This World Mental Health Day, let’s remind ourselves that taking care of our mental health doesn’t have to be complicated. Whether it’s through music, art, movement, or a simple mindful moment, there are many ways to nurture our well-being. And most importantly, no matter where we are on our journey, support is always within reach.
