Pouring with Purpose: The Volunteer Story of 61-Year-Old Barista Daniel Soh

For many, retirement signals the start of a slower, more relaxed phase of life. But for 61-year-old Daniel Soh, it became the launchpad for a fresh passion and a deeper sense of purpose.

Shifting Gears in Retirement

After three decades in the aviation industry with notable stints at SATS, Tiger Air, and Scoot, Daniel transitioned into the education sector, taking on the role of an administrative vice principal. Expecting a gentler pace, he was surprised to find the demands just as intense. That realization nudged him toward true retirement, a time to pursue what truly interested him.

“I began travelling with my family and signing up for classes that intrigued me,” Daniel recalls. “Then my daughter suggested I get a hobby.” Inspired, he took up a barista course. Equipped with tools gifted by his daughter, he honed his skills and eventually earned barista certification.

Brewing Connections Through Coffee

What began as a curiosity led Daniel to volunteer at Goodlife Makan, a community kitchen for seniors. Every Thursday, he now serves as a volunteer barista and more than that, a mentor. He trains fellow seniors in coffee-making, empowering them to run the café in his absence.

“Daniel’s already trained five seniors,” shares Boon Cheng, Programme Manager at Goodlife Makan. “When he’s not around, they take charge of the café.”

Goodlife Makan isn’t just a café; it’s a place where seniors cook, dine, and build community. With weekday meals prepared for 40 solo-living seniors, it’s a hub of activity and connection. The centre also offers trendy workshops on things like kombucha and mocktails, helping seniors stay in touch with current trends.

Daniel recently led a coffee appreciation session, covering everything from coffee history to hands-on espresso machine practice. These workshops are held twice a year, not necessarily to create professional baristas, but to spark appreciation and maybe even inspire a few to join the café team. “If we build a team of trained seniors,” Daniel notes, “the café could eventually become a social enterprise. The profits could then support more programmes.”

Lifelong Learning, Lasting Impact

Outside his barista role, Daniel enjoys participating in other workshops, like crafting beverages, a hobby he clearly delights in. “Mocktails, kombucha, you name it, I’m always up for learning about drinks!” he laughs.

For Daniel, volunteering isn’t just about filling time, it’s a way to give back and stay engaged. “I love sharing what I’ve learned. And if I can keep this café going while training others, that’s incredibly rewarding.”

He’s had offers to return to full-time work but turned them down. “What I treasure most about retirement is the freedom to choose how I spend my time. Volunteering gives me flexibility and fulfillment.”

His advice to other retirees? “Absolutely give volunteering a try. Seniors have a wealth of knowledge to share with their peers and younger generations. It’s a meaningful way to make a difference during this chapter of life.”

Daniel’s journey is proof that retirement doesn’t have to mean slowing down. It can be the perfect time to rediscover passions, connect with others, and leave a legacy of service.
