Uncle Alex Chong resides in a rental flat in Marine Parade, sharing the space with a co-tenant.
Once fiercely independent, he gradually became self-isolated from his family and friends. In 2017, he joined Goodlife Makan’s community lunch program, designed for seniors living alone. Initially, Uncle Alex would come for lunch and leave promptly after eating, with minimal interactions with other seniors and staff, often avoiding additional programmes.
When the pandemic hit, the center paused operations and began delivering meals to isolated seniors. In 2022, staff noticed Uncle Alex hadn’t attended lunch and discovered he was unwell. They reached out, ensuring he was okay, and through this support, they learned more about him.
During conversations, Uncle Alex shared fond memories of helping his grandfather roast coffee beans and prepare Nanyang Coffee at his grandfather’s coffee shop. Recognising his passion, the team invited him to join their barista training course. Since then, there’s been no looking back—he has become the café’s daily barista and actively helps with various center operations, always ready to lend a hand.
Over the months, Uncle Alex has transformed into a cherished member of the community, forming friendships and becoming an integral part of the team. No longer defined by solitude, he now embodies the joy of connection, proving it’s never too late to embrace life fully.
