For 69-year-old Uncle Michael, life became a struggle after his mother passed away eight years ago. Left alone, grief consumed him, and he slipped into depression.
“I didn’t see the point of living, ” Uncle Michael shared. “With my mother gone, it was just me. I was so afraid of being alone.” Two years ago, Uncle Michael was introduced to Goodlife Studio (Bukit Purmei) Although social activities like painting and dancing were available, he was hesitant to join.
However, a men-only carpentry workshop caught his attention. “Because it was for men only, I decided to join,” Uncle Michael said. “We worked together—some sawed, some sanded, some screwed in bolts. It was
hands-on and felt productive.”

Older men often avoid community activities due to their social nature, but the carpentry workshop offers a quieter, more practical option. Participants repair furniture for low-income families and build bookshelves for public reading spaces, giving their efforts meaningful purpose.
Uncle Michael found not just a hobby, but a way to reconnect with others and contribute to society.
“Before, others helped me when I was struggling. Now I’m giving back. I love helping others, especially the elderly.” Today, Uncle Michael is cheerful and engaged. “I’m so happy here,” he said. “No complaints, just praise.” Through carpentry, Uncle Michael not only found a way to occupy his hands but also a path to heal his heart and rebuild his life.
